Effects of cirrus near the tropopause on anvil cirrus dynamics

چکیده
[1] Recent space and airborne observations have noted tenuous cirrus near the tropopause and above deep convective anvil outflow. We use a cloud-resolving model, initialized with aircraft observations taken during the CRYSTAL-FACE experiment, to explore the effects of such cirrus layers on anvil evolution. Numerical simulations demonstrate that anvil cirrus spreads because strong absorption of thermal radiation and emission at cloud base and top creates horizontal heating gradients between the cloud and its environment. The presence of a second layer of cirrus near the tropopause forces the upper part of the anvil to equilibrate to warmer radiative temperatures than would normally be associated with a clear upper atmosphere. Compared to a case without thin cirrus, the associated reduction to heating gradients at anvil cloud top corresponds to reduced anvil spreading and turbulent kinetic energy, by as much as 19% and 40%, respectively. These results suggest that tropopause cirrus can affect climate indirectly, by altering anvil cirrus dynamics. Citation: Garrett, T. J., M. A. Zulauf, and S. K. The heat balance of the tropical tropopause, cirrus, and stratospheric dehydration
If tropical tropopause cirrus lie above convective anvils with tops above about 13km, then net radiative cooling from the cirrus can be produced that is large enough to offset significant subsidence heating, even at the lowest temperatures observed in the tropics. Cirrus clouds near the tropopause are strongly heated by radiation unless they lie above convective anvil clouds. Radiative relaxati...

[1] During the July 2002 CRYSTAL-FACE field program based from Key West, Florida, aircraft measurements showed that long-lived thin tropopause cirrus (TTC) layers were often present above thunderstorm anvils. This paper describes these clouds and explores their possible origins. Measurements showed that the horizontal dimensions of TTC layers were nearly identical to convectively formed anvils ...

[1] Cirrus formation and geometrical and optical properties of tropical cirrus as a function of height and temperature are studied on the basis of INDOEX (Indian Ocean Experiment) lidar and radiosonde measurements and satellite observations of deep convection causing the generation of anvil cirrus. Lidar and radiosonde measurements were conducted at Hulule (4.1 N, 73.3 E), Maldives, during four...

Optically thin cirrus near the tropical tropopause regulate the humidity of air entering the stratosphere, which in turn has a strong influence on the Earth's radiation budget and climate. Recent high-altitude, unmanned aircraft measurements provide evidence for two distinct classes of cirrus formed in the tropical tropopause region: (i) vertically extensive cirrus with low ice number concentra...

Upper tropospheric humidity plays an important role in the formation and maintenance of tropical cirrus clouds. Deep convection is crucial for the transport of water vapor from the boundary layer to the upper troposphere and is responsible for the formation of anvil cirrus that can spread horizontally over considerable distances and persist for several hours. In addition, recent studies have li...
